Mechanical Engineer Job Responsibilities

Supervise Mechanical staff in the mechanical Sections of the Company in Honiara and Noro.

Mechanical Engineer Job Duties

  • Evaluates mechanical problems and conducting verification as to nature of faults and problems.
  • Confirm mechanical needs, issues and matters that may require Management decision
  • Assures and ensures that all mechanical equipments are available for operational usage.
  • Prepares product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Provides mechanical engineering information by answering questions and requests.
  • Maintains product and company reputation by complying with government regulations.
  • Keeps equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special services.
  • Completes projects by training and guiding mechanical engineering staff.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Co-ordinate ALL mechanical requisitions and purchases in Honiara and Noro.

Pilot Cadet

Another vacancy has become available within the Harbours Department. Below are some of the specifications of the job and remuneration package.

  • Title: Port Pilot
  • Department: Harbours
  • Responsible to: Harbour Master
  • Proposed Scale: Senior Level
  • Salary Level (SBD): $180,000 to $200,000 (Subject to completion of probationary period)
  • Benefits: Rental package can be negotiated

Pilot Cadet Job Responsibilities

The port pilot needs to be reasonably fit, comfortable working on the water and at height, and there may also be some on-call requirement and shift or weekend work is very likely.

Pilot Cadet Job Duties

  • Physical tasks – the Port Pilots are required to board moving vessels from small high powered launches, often in rough seas. This involves climbing high ladders to access vessel decks.
  • Pilotage planning – before boarding a vessel the Port Pilot is required to plan the course of the vessel taking into account tides, weather, size, weight and operational characteristics of the vessel, and if there is a need for tugs.
  • Piloting the vessel – the Port Pilot will have responsibility for navigating the vessel safely in and out of the harbour and needs to work very closely with the captain, and other members of the crew, to achieve this. They would also need to be able to use the ships navigational and communications equipment, liaising with other vessels and the port control centre.
